Sainsbury's Urges Shoppers to Donate £2 for Christmas Food Poverty
Sainsbury's £2 Christmas Donation to Fight Food Poverty

Sainsbury's is calling on its customers to add a small act of kindness to their Christmas shopping routine this year. The supermarket giant is urging shoppers to make a £2 donation to help combat food poverty across the UK during the festive season.

How You Can Donate at Sainsbury's

The initiative, run in partnership with Comic Relief, offers multiple easy ways for customers to contribute. When paying for your shopping at manned or self-service tills, you can add a donation of £2, £5, or £10 directly to your bill. For those using the SmartShop service, £2 or £10 donations can be made by scanning special barcodes available in-store.

Online shoppers are not left out, as the option to add a donation is also available when placing grocery orders for home delivery. This flexible approach ensures everyone can participate, regardless of how they choose to shop.

Donating Through Nectar Points

For loyal Nectar cardholders, there's an alternative way to support the cause without spending extra cash. Customers can donate their Nectar points to Comic Relief via the Nectar app or website. The minimum donation is 200 points, which equates to £1.

Sainsbury's has highlighted what these contributions can achieve: 200 points (£1) could provide five meals for a family facing hardship this winter. Larger donations have an even greater impact, with 1,000 points (£5) potentially providing 25 meals, and 5,000 points (£25) contributing towards 125 meals for those experiencing food insecurity.

A Wider Commitment to Tackling Hunger

This customer donation scheme is part of Sainsbury's broader 'Nourish the Nation' programme with Comic Relief. The supermarket has committed to donating more than five million meals through this collaboration to support families struggling with food poverty.

Additionally, Sainsbury's will contribute £1 million to Comic Relief from sales of products in its BFG Christmas range and items marked with the Comic Relief logo. This means purchases from these specific ranges also generate support for the cause.

The donation opportunity will run until December 24, giving customers plenty of time to participate throughout the busy Christmas shopping period. Sainsbury's emphasises that Christmas should be a time of joyful memories and shared meals, a reality that remains out of reach for the more than seven million people in the UK currently experiencing food poverty.
