In a heart-warming festive surprise, Santa Claus made a special pre-Christmas delivery to the Samaritans branch in Rhyl, presenting a generous cheque for £500 on behalf of the town's Rotary Club.
Festive Cheque Presentation at Bedford Street
The surprise visit took place at the charity's office at 23 Bedford Street, Rhyl. Santa, portrayed by veteran Rotarian Rufus Adams, who is also the original Deputy Director of the Samaritans' office, handed over the donation to acting Joint-Director Peter Kirkpatrick.
This latest contribution means the Rotary Club has now raised a total of £2,500 for the Samaritans during 2024/25, adding to £2,000 already collected earlier in the year.
Gratitude from Samaritans and Rotary
Peter Kirkpatrick expressed profound thanks for the unexpected gift. "We're so grateful for this generous gift - and for Santa taking time out of his busy schedule to bring it to us," he said. "It will make a real difference to our volunteer-run branch in the year ahead."
John Dicks, the current Secretary and a past President of Rhyl Rotary Club, highlighted the personal significance of the chosen charity. As the club's 99th President, he led it into its centenary year and selected the Samaritans as a main charity for 2024/25.
"As a previous Samaritan, I know from first-hand experience that they do a fantastic job and provide an essential service for the members of our Rhyl community," Dicks stated. He extended thanks to the people of Rhyl for their "amazing generosity" in helping raise the substantial sum.
Recognising Decades of Vital Service
Rufus Adams, embodying Santa for the occasion, emphasised the critical role Samaritans play, especially during the festive period. "The festive season can be a sad and lonely time for many people and it is wonderful that The Samaritans can provide a sympathetic ear for vulnerable members of our community," he remarked.
Having witnessed the branch's evolution over 50 years, Adams praised the "small army of willing volunteers" whose dedicated work has seen the Rhyl operation "grow from strength-to-strength."
The Samaritans offer a confidential, free support service 24 hours a day. Anyone in need can call 116 1123 or email jo@samaritans.org.
