Snooker Champion Shaun Murphy Donates £5,800 to Rainbows Hospice Through Century Breaks
Professional snooker player Shaun Murphy has successfully raised £5,800 for Rainbows Hospice for Children and Young People, a charity based in Loughborough. The funds were generated through his impressive performance during the 2024/25 snooker season, where he achieved 58 century breaks. For each of these breaks, Murphy personally contributed £100 from his own resources, demonstrating his commitment to the cause.
Patronage and Personal Commitment
In October 2024, Shaun Murphy officially became a Patron of Rainbows Hospice, which specializes in providing expert palliative and end-of-life care for babies, children, and young people from across Leicestershire and the broader East Midlands region. Reflecting on his involvement, Murphy stated: “My fiancée Jo and I are honoured to be involved with Rainbows, and as a Patron, I’m delighted to be able to help in any way I can. Raising money through century breaks is a fun way I can show my support for what is a wonderful place and does unbelievable work for families across the East Midlands.”
Recognition and Impact
Shaun Murphy is one of snooker's most recognizable figures, having won the 2005 World Championship and becoming the second-youngest world champion at the age of 22. His fundraising efforts have been warmly received by the charity. Jane Burns, CEO of Rainbows, commented: “Shaun didn’t just pot an incredible amount of balls, he potted amazing funds for our charity and we thank him for his donation. Without the support of our Patrons and fundraisers, we simply wouldn’t be able to provide the services we do to our families at their toughest times, whether that be at the hospice, in hospitals or at home.”
The donation highlights the importance of community support for vital healthcare services, particularly in palliative care for young patients. Rainbows Hospice relies on such contributions to continue its essential work, offering comfort and assistance during challenging periods for families.
