Sobell House Hospice 50th Anniversary Events and Fundraisers

With May marking the official 50th anniversary of Sobell House Hospice, the community is buzzing with activity. Several highlights from May include the Forever Flowers display and the Spring Stroll.

Forever Flowers at Blenheim Palace

As previously shared, Sobell House showcased a stunning display of 680 golden flowers at Blenheim Palace to celebrate the anniversary while allowing people throughout Oxfordshire to remember their loved ones. The flowers are now being carefully packed and sent to their forever homes.

Spring Stroll Success

The Spring Stroll took place on Sunday, May 10, with over 400 walkers enjoying a wonderful day despite strong winds. One of the new participants this year was Patch, the new mascot bear, who proved to be a hit with supporters. Patch will make appearances at many more events, starting with the Blenheim 7k this weekend.

Upcoming Celebrations

The official 50th celebration will be held on May 25, and during that week, a time capsule will be buried in the hospice garden. Among the items included will be a special edition of the Sobell Times, filled with stories and memories from the pioneers of the hospice. A timeline on the website highlights significant milestones from the past 50 years.

On June 13, a big celebration event is planned at the Westgate, featuring fun, entertainment, and games, including craft workshops that can be booked in advance.

Fabulous Fundraisers

Several incredible fundraisers are supporting the celebrations. Mark Temple, an Oxford Bus Company driver, has taken on many challenges for the hospice and is now cycling from Liverpool's football stadium to Oxford United on June 14. The hospice is close to his heart as it cared for his father, Patrick, in 2012. Donations can be made via his JustGiving page.

Kelly's Heroes, a group of cycling fundraisers who cycled 420 miles over three days last year, are launching a '50 for 50 for 50' challenge. They are recruiting 50 people to cycle 50 miles for the 50th anniversary. As they say, 'No Lycra required. No Tour de France expectations. Just a bike and a bit of effort.'

So far, 10 schools have signed up for Pot of Gold, a schools fundraiser this autumn. Pot of Gold Day is a fun non-uniform day that schools can hold on any weekday between September and December. Pupils can wear their own clothes, bright colours, or fancy dress while raising £1 or £2 each. The hospice provides a fundraising kit, and each school receives a special letter, rainbow certificate, and Bertie Bear teddy, plus entry into a December prize draw featuring visits from Oxfordshire authors and illustrators, including Sobell ambassador Korkypaul.

Kate Rush from Windrush School said, 'Windrush Church of England Primary School is looking forward to supporting the Sobell House Pot of Gold Day with a non-uniform day in September. Several staff members and families have experienced the amazing support that Sobell House offers, so we are delighted to support such a great local cause.'
