Son to Run London Marathon in Memory of Mum, Honouring Marie Curie Hospice Care
Son Runs Marathon for Mum's Memory, Thanks to Hospice Care

In a heartfelt tribute to his late mother, a son is gearing up to run the 2026 TCS London Marathon, aiming to raise vital funds for Marie Curie, the charity that provided exceptional care during her final weeks. Debbie Finlay, a resident of Penarth in the Vale of Glamorgan, passed away in January 2025 after a five-year battle with neuroendocrine cancer, spending her last days at the Marie Curie Hospice in Cardiff and the Vale.

Compassionate Care in Difficult Times

Stuart Finlay, who grew up in Cardiff but now lives in Manchester, shared how the hospice staff created special moments for his family during a challenging period. Over Christmas and into the New Year, they organized festive celebrations and even arranged a visit from the cast of the New Theatre Cardiff's pantomime production of Cinderella, bringing joy and comfort. Stuart emphasized that the warmth and dedication of the staff and volunteers made them feel like part of the Marie Curie family, providing crucial emotional support.

Family Praise and Ongoing Support

Debbie's husband, John, also spoke highly of the compassionate and supportive care received during her final weeks and in the aftermath of her death. He now benefits from bereavement counselling offered by Marie Curie, highlighting the charity's holistic approach to end-of-life care. Stuart's marathon effort is driven by a desire to ensure other families can access similar support, with over £2,800 already raised and more funds targeted.

Marie Curie's Broader Impact

Marie Curie, a UK-wide charity, provides hospice, hospital, and community services for individuals with terminal illnesses, along with a free Information and Support line. This year marks the 40th anniversary of its Great Daffodil Appeal, a campaign that raises awareness and funds through initiatives like daffodil pin sales in Morrisons stores during March. Stuart's fundraising page allows the public to contribute to his marathon challenge, supporting the charity's mission to deliver expert care and family assistance.

By taking on this marathon, Stuart not only honours his mother's memory but also champions the invaluable work of Marie Curie in offering dignity and comfort during life's most difficult moments.
