A long-serving volunteer for the Armed Forces charity SSAFA has been honoured with a prestigious commendation for his exceptional dedication to helping veterans, serving personnel, and their families in Gloucestershire.
A Prestigious Recognition for 16 Years of Service
Roger Wilson was presented with the Chief of Staff Commendation from the Allied Rapid Reaction Corps (ARRC) during the charity's annual Christmas carol services. The award was presented by the ARRC's Chief of Staff, Major General ND Grant DSO MC.
Roger has been a volunteer with SSAFA for 16 years, taking on vital roles as a caseworker and divisional secretary. His work has been fundamental in providing support during times of hardship for the military community across the Gloucestershire region.
Driven by Compassion and a Lifetime of Service
The commendation followed a specific case in 2024 where Roger worked tirelessly to support a family through a serious illness. He coordinated financial assistance for accommodation and provided constant reassurance, ensuring the family could remain close to their loved one.
His commitment to service began long before his volunteering. Roger served for 22 years as an Engineering Officer in the RAF, working on aircraft including Phantoms, Harriers, and Vulcans. He then spent a further 16 years working at GCHQ, within the MOD, and on a US Navy base before beginning his volunteer journey with SSAFA in 2011.
The Lifeline Provided by SSAFA Gloucestershire
Lieutenant Colonel Tim Mallett, chief public affairs officer for the ARRC, praised Roger's efforts. "Mr Wilson is compassionate and determined," he said. "His actions remind us of what true service and humanity look like. On behalf of HQ ARRC, thank you, Mr Wilson and thank you, SSAFA Gloucestershire for being a lifeline when it matters most."
Roger is one of 15 driven volunteers at the Gloucestershire branch of SSAFA, which handles an average of 90 support cases every year. Stephen Shergold, SSAFA Gloucestershire Branch Chair, stated: "Roger is truly deserving of this recognition. I have witnessed Roger's exceptional dedication and skill as a caseworker. He really embodies SSAFA's mission to ensure no-one, veteran, serving personnel or their families alike is left to battle alone."
SSAFA, established in 1885, provides lifelong support to the Armed Forces community, including regulars and reserves, serving or retired, and their families.
