BAFTA-winning actor and League of Gentlemen creator Steve Pemberton has secured a significant victory for a cherished local cause, winning £12,800 on BBC's The Weakest Link and pledging the entire sum to Derian House Children's Hospice in Chorley.
A Tense Finale for a Heartfelt Cause
The celebrated performer, who grew up in Chorley, Lancashire, emerged triumphant from a competitive celebrity line-up on the quiz show, hosted by comedian Romesh Ranganathan. The episode aired on Saturday, January 17, featuring contestants including BBC Still Game's Sanjeev Kohli, Cherry Healey, and Sian Welby.
"That last round was like all the other rounds combined. It was really tense, but I'm really pleased - and really pleased for the charity," Steve remarked after his win, highlighting the intense pressure of the final showdown.
Deep-Rooted Local Connections
Steve Pemberton's commitment to Derian House is profoundly personal. As a long-standing ambassador for the hospice, he has a deep historical connection to the site, having played football on the fields where the facility now stands.
"Derian House Children's Hospice is in Chorley, Lancashire, which is where I'm from," Steve explained. "They support children with life-limiting illnesses and their families. I grew up very close to the site where Derian House now stands. Derian House is well-known in the area and nationally for providing the very best care."
Making a Tangible Difference for Families
The generous donation will provide crucial support for the hospice, which cares for more than 400 babies, children, young people, and their families from across the North West of England each year. Caroline Taylor, Deputy Chief Executive at Derian House, expressed immense gratitude for Steve's ongoing advocacy.
"Steve is a fantastic ambassador for Derian. The money raised will make a real difference to the children and families who rely on our care, and we are so thankful that he has chosen once again to shine a light on the work we do," said Caroline Taylor.
The Vital Need for Community Support
Derian House provides all care free of charge to families, but faces substantial annual operating costs of approximately £6 million. The charity receives only around 30% of its funding from government sources, relying on public generosity to raise the remaining 70p of every pound needed.
Steve Pemberton's support extends beyond financial contributions; he also serves as an executive producer for the Derian House documentary 'The Little Things', available on Amazon Prime in the UK and US, helping to raise awareness of the hospice's vital work on an international platform.
"It's an incredible cause and I'm delighted to give them that money," Steve stated, reaffirming his pride in supporting an organisation that helps families create precious memories during challenging times.
