Sue Ryder's Lap the Lake Open-Water Swimming Event Returns to Reading
National palliative and bereavement support charity Sue Ryder is excited to announce the return of its popular open-water swimming event, Lap the Lake, this May. Scheduled for Saturday, May 16, the event promises a bigger and better experience, inviting swimmers to enjoy a fun and fitness-filled day while raising crucial funds for the charity. Sue Ryder operates the Duchess of Kent Hospice in Reading, providing expert care to those approaching the end of life or living with grief.
Event Details and New Features
For the second consecutive year, Lap the Lake will be held at the Hi5Ski School in Reading, set against the stunning backdrop of Reading Lake. Participants can choose from multiple swim distances: 500m, 750m, or 1km, with a new addition this year of a 2.5k option. This range ensures the event is accessible to swimmers of all abilities, from beginners to seasoned enthusiasts. The event is open to individuals aged 18 and above, with early bird tickets priced at £12.50 plus Eventbrite fees, available until March 9.
Ashni Parmar, Senior Community Fundraiser at Sue Ryder, expressed enthusiasm for the event: "We're delighted to host our second Lap the Lake event, and we can't wait to welcome both returning swimmers and those taking part for the first time. We hope to raise as much money as possible to continue providing expert and compassionate care to our community." She encouraged everyone, from experienced swimmers to those seeking a unique challenge, to join and make a splash for the cause.
Personal Stories and Fundraising Success
Ian Ormerod from Tokers Green participated in the inaugural Lap the Lake last year in memory of his father-in-law, who received care from Sue Ryder nurses. Reflecting on his experience, Ian said: "The Sue Ryder Nurses were amazing, and when I heard about the Lap the Lake event, I thought it would be a really nice thing to do. As an avid swimmer who hits the pool about five times a week and enjoys open-water swimming three times a year, it was the perfect challenge for me." He praised the event's organization and the friendly support from staff and volunteers.
Ian chose the 1k lap and described his emotions: "Waiting to go in, I felt a mixture of nerves and excitement, but on entering the water, I had a surge of energy. It's not a race; you can take it at your own pace, and everyone was cheered on regardless of ability." His fundraising efforts were highly successful, raising over £1,700 for Sue Ryder. Ian noted: "I was blown away by the amount I raised. I regularly take part in charity events, but last year, I far surpassed my target, likely because many people have a connection to the cause. I'd say to anyone considering getting involved to take the plunge."
Logistics and Participation Requirements
To ensure safety and visibility, all swimmers must wear a brightly coloured swimming hat while in the lake. Participants should bring their own hats, although a limited number will be available for purchase on the day. The event emphasizes a supportive and non-competitive atmosphere, making it ideal for community engagement and personal achievement.
By combining physical activity with charitable giving, Lap the Lake offers a meaningful way to support Sue Ryder's vital services. Whether you're a seasoned swimmer or looking for a new challenge, this event provides an opportunity to contribute to a worthy cause while enjoying the natural beauty of Reading Lake.
