Tandem Cycling Couple Takes on Britain's Ultimate Ride for Hospice Charity
Megan and Mark Whittaker are gearing up for their most formidable tandem bike challenge yet: a monumental journey from Land's End in Cornwall to John o' Groats in Scotland. This 14-day expedition, scheduled from July 18 to August 2, aims to raise crucial funds for Moya Cole Hospice, an organization that provided compassionate end-of-life care to Megan's grandmothers.
Personal Connection Drives Fundraising Effort
The hospice holds a special place in the Whittakers' hearts, having cared for Megan's nanna, Gertrude, in 2015 and her honorary grandma, Annie, in 2007. Moya Cole Hospice offered not only medical support but also a safe environment for families to communicate and access therapies like massage. Annie passed away peacefully there in June 2007, and the couple wishes to express gratitude for the love and dignity shown to their grandparents.
"We want to thank them for all their love and support caring for our two amazing grandparents and help them be the difference to others in need," Megan shared.
Training and Tandem History
Megan and Mark began tandem biking in 2016 with the Manchester to Blackpool Bike Ride for the Alzheimer's Society, a condition Gertrude had. They purchased their first tandem bike, naming it Trudie after Megan's grandmother, and recently acquired a second, dubbed Eve in honor of her other grandmother who volunteered at the hospice.
Over the years, they have participated in various events, including:
- Coast to Coast in a Day
- Tour de Manc
These rides have supported charities such as the British Heart Foundation, Dementia UK, Children with Cancer UK, and Millys Smiles. Cycling became a therapeutic outlet for Megan after her nanna's passing, transforming grief into a force for good.
Challenge Details and Community Impact
The couple will cover 60 to 80 miles daily, focusing on recovery and endurance rather than just distance. "We're not worried about the distance as such; we are more worried about recovery and cycling on tired legs day after day," Megan noted.
Moya Cole Hospice provides holistic care through inpatient services, day therapy, and outpatient support at locations in Heald Green, Stockport, and Little Hulton, Salford. Additional community services include:
- Hospice at Home in Salford and Trafford
- Community Specialist Palliative Care Team in Salford
- Homelessness palliative care service in Manchester
- A 24-hour advice line for patients, carers, and professionals across multiple areas
The Whittakers emphasize that even small donations, such as £1 in memory of a loved one, can collectively make a significant impact on the hospice's operations.
