Terrier Toby Waits 690 Days for Forever Home at RSPCA

An overlooked terrier named Toby is hoping that May will finally be the month he finds a forever home after waiting for more than 690 days in RSPCA care. Toby is currently being looked after at the RSPCA Bryn Y Maen Animal Centre in Upper Colwyn Bay. He was originally transferred from another branch after failing to attract any interest from potential adopters.

Despite travelling 185 miles from the RSPCA Great Ayton Animal Centre in Middlesbrough, the four-year-old tan terrier continues to be overlooked by visitors. Rescued by the charity from a multi-animal household, Toby has since learned to enjoy human interaction and affection.

Staff Describe Toby as a Lovely Boy

Sarah Davies, animal care assistant, said: "Toby is such a lovely boy and his little tail never stops wagging - but unfortunately he has not found his forever home yet. He loves sniffing about and exploring the world and is keen to make friends at the centre. Toby is super clever and loves to figure out what handlers ask of him for food and praise. He hops into our vans with ease and travelled well during his transfer to our centre."

Ready to Learn

Staff say Toby is very clever and responds well to training with treats. Sarah continued: "Toby has his favourite people at the centre and enjoys fusses once he has built his confidence with you. He enjoys snoozing in his kennel and spending time with his nose in the sunshine. When he isn't sniffing about, he is snoozing the day away!"

While staying at the Great Ayton site, Toby was desensitised to various household items, such as the vacuum cleaner, which he previously found frightening. Staff say he is a quick learner who is keen to train for treats and praise.

Why Has Toby Been Overlooked?

"We are baffled as to why he has spent so long in RSPCA care, and hope this month will be his month to find his perfect match," Sarah added. Toby is looking for an adult-only home where he can be the only pet.

Frieda the Kitten Also Seeks a Home

Joining him in the search for a new start is Frieda, a seven-month-old kitten. Sadly, Frieda was recently returned to the centre after finding a previous home environment too stressful. Sarah commented: "Unfortunately Frieda’s home didn’t work out, so we are now looking for an adult-only home for her. She is well loved amongst the staff after being a previous hand-rear kitten at our centre."

Frieda is a sweet girl and loves to be around people. She enjoys a fuss from her friends but equally loves to run around chasing her favourite toys. Frieda has also spent some time in a foster home and has easily won the hearts of her carers. But she can't wait to find a family to call her own.

RSPCA Crisis: Rising Cruelty and Neglect

Rising cruelty, neglect, and large-scale rescues led to a crisis point last summer, with a six-year high of animals in RSPCA care. With centres currently full, the charity is urgently seeking loving homes to ensure they can continue to bring thousands of animals in need to safety.

Those interested in Toby or Frieda are encouraged to express their interest via the RSPCA online application form.
