Three vital community projects making a wonderful difference to local lives have each received a fantastic financial boost. The groups in and around Alfreton and Somercotes have been awarded funding through the first round of the 2026 Trafford Lowe Funeral Services Community Assistance programme.
Mickley Community Volunteer Group
The first recipient is the Mickley Community Volunteer Group, which will use the money to fund room hire for their weekly free cafe. Held at Mickley Community Centre, the Welcoming Spaces project provides hot food, drinks, and activities to help reduce social isolation for people of all ages.
The Catch Up Club
The Catch Up Club has also received an award to help support crafts and engaging sessions at their monthly community group. This group provides a friendly and supportive environment for families with special educational needs children, carers, and service users.
OSCARI
The final funding recipient is OSCARI, who will use the money to convert an existing kitchen space into a dedicated food storage room for their community pantry. They will also install a small kitchenette in the main building to create a more welcoming, functional space for the local community.
Presentation of Cheques
The cheques were proudly presented by Doug Atherton, from Trafford Lowe, and Francesca Spencer-Fox, from the judging panel. Doug Atherton said: “We are delighted to be able to offer support to these caring projects in the local area.” “Both groups are making a real difference to people’s lives, providing much-needed, meaningful support to local people.” Francesca Spencer-Fox added: “We’re proud to highlight the positivity that’s happening right on our doorstep and are looking forward to seeing these projects continue and grow.”
About the Grants Programme
The teams at the Alfreton and Somercotes funeral directors launched their special grants programme on February 1. Their aim is to provide financial support for non-profit projects that benefit people living within two miles of their two funeral homes. To qualify, projects must align with core fund categories, including health, education, employment opportunities, and tackling poverty or social deprivation. The second cycle of the grants programme will open for applications on June 29, 2026, when a further £1,000 will be available for good causes.
