Tiny Lives Appeal Reaches Major Fundraising Milestone in York

York & Scarborough Hospitals Charity is celebrating a significant achievement as its Tiny Lives Appeal has successfully raised £50,000 in just a few weeks. This remarkable sum represents exactly half of the campaign's overall £100,000 target, demonstrating a powerful wave of community support for the region's most vulnerable newborns.

Community Efforts Drive Rapid Fundraising Success

Launched in November 2025, the appeal reached the £50,000 milestone in January 2026, propelled by an extraordinary outpouring of generosity from individuals, local organisations, and businesses across York and North Yorkshire. Several standout community initiatives have significantly boosted the total, including a substantial £3,600 donation from York Register Office and an impressive £13,479 raised through the York Ghost Merchants raffle. Furthermore, a dedicated online auction supported by local enterprises and residents generated £6,774, complementing countless personal donations from compassionate supporters.

Supporting York's Smallest and Most Vulnerable Patients

Each year, approximately 375 babies begin their lives in the Neonatal Unit at York Hospital. These infants are born prematurely or with serious health complications, requiring highly specialised medical care. Their families, in turn, need immense reassurance, comfort, and support during one of the most challenging periods they will ever face. The unit, previously known as the Special Care Baby Unit (SCBU), provides essential care for families from across both York and Scarborough.

A major £2 million refurbishment project is currently underway, with the modernised unit scheduled to open in 2026. This transformation will create a more welcoming and supportive environment where babies can grow stronger and parents can feel better supported throughout their hospital stay.

How the Funds Will Transform the New Neonatal Unit

The Tiny Lives Appeal aims to raise £100,000 specifically to fund additional, vital equipment and furnishings that will help make the new unit a calm, comforting, and truly family-friendly space. The planned enhancements, made possible by these donations, are designed with both infant care and family wellbeing in mind.

  • Reclining chairs to allow parents to remain close to their babies day and night.
  • Twin cots enabling babies to stay together from the very beginning of their lives.
  • Height-adjustable cots to better support mothers who are recovering from Caesarean sections.
  • More comfortable family furniture to help parents get much-needed rest during long stays.
  • Therapeutic skylights to soften the clinical atmosphere and foster a calmer, more reassuring environment for everyone.

Charity Leaders Express Gratitude and Look Ahead

Emma Sargent, Fundraising Manager at York and Scarborough Hospitals Charity, shared her enthusiasm: “Reaching £50,000 so quickly is an incredible achievement, and we’re really grateful to everyone who has supported the appeal so far. This milestone shows just how much our community cares about giving the smallest and most vulnerable babies the best possible start in life.”

She added a note of determination: “But we’re only halfway there. The next £50,000 will make a real difference to families spending long days and nights on the unit, and there is still time for people to get involved and help us reach the finish line.”

Katie Mortimer, Matron on the Neonatal Unit at York Hospital, emphasised the emotional impact of the new facilities: “The care we provide is highly specialised, but it’s also deeply emotional for families. Having the right environment around them - a space that feels calm, private and supportive - can make such a difference during a frightening and uncertain time. These improvements will help parents stay close to their babies, feel more comfortable, and focus on bonding and recovery together. We are so thankful to everyone who is supporting the Tiny Lives Appeal.”

A Call to Action for the Final £50,000

The charity is now urging local residents and businesses to help raise the final £50,000 to complete the Tiny Lives Appeal. Supporters can contribute in a variety of ways that suit them, from making a direct donation—where every single gift makes a difference—to pledging £500 or more to have their name recognised on a dedicated donor wall within the new unit. For those seeking a more active role, taking on a personal fundraising challenge is encouraged, such as participating in the upcoming Charity Golf Day on Friday, August 7, at Sandburn Hall.
