Epic Year-Long Challenge Concludes at the Foot of the World's Highest Peak
An inspirational veteran from the Wirral, Gina Allsop, has triumphantly completed an extraordinary year-long physical challenge, covering a staggering 5,200 miles to raise vital funds for SSAFA, the Armed Forces charity. Her incredible journey, which saw her travel the equivalent of 100 miles every single week for an entire year, concluded in dramatic fashion with a trek to Everest Base Camp.
A Journey of Many Miles and Methods
Gina's dedication to the cause was demonstrated through the sheer variety of ways she clocked up the miles. Her year was filled with organised walks, weekend hikes with friends, and camping adventures in the hills. When not traversing the countryside, she was static cycling or walking at home, proving her commitment never wavered. The pinnacle of her efforts was undoubtedly her expedition to Everest Base Camp, a formidable challenge in itself.
This epic finale was made even more intense as Gina led a team of women through what she described as an “unforgettable test of endurance” during the notorious Everest storm of 2025. Battling the elements, the team successfully reached their goal, marking a powerful end to a life-changing year.
Personal Motivation and Charitable Support
Gina undertook this monumental task for two deeply personal reasons. She aimed to honour the memory of her brother, who died from cancer, and to give back to SSAFA. The charity had been a crucial source of support for Gina during her own toughest times. Five years ago, she was diagnosed with PTSD and found that cycling was a vital tool for managing her mental health.
However, after a serious accident that wrecked her bike, it was SSAFA who stepped in, sourcing funds for a replacement and helping her get back on her feet. This act of kindness during her darkest moment inspired her to dedicate her challenge to the charity.
Gina commented: “When I hit my lowest point, SSAFA helped me rebuild. I wanted to give something back - not just to say thank you, but to make sure other veterans, serving personnel and their families get help when they need it most.”
She added, “Every mile I’ve travelled has been for them, and for my brother. Standing at the foot of Everest with my team was emotional, humbling and exhilarating - the perfect end to a year that changed my life.”
Continuing the Fundraising Mission
Although her year of exertion is over, Gina's fundraising mission continues. Her JustGiving page has already raised thousands of pounds, but she is determined to see the total climb even higher. She has kept the page open so that supporters can continue to donate, helping SSAFA provide its vital assistance to the Armed Forces community.
This is not the first time Gina has challenged herself for SSAFA, having undertaken many other fundraising efforts for the charity over the years. SSAFA volunteers have been supporting the Armed Forces community – including regulars and reserves, serving or retired, and their families – since 1885.
