A woman has been arrested in Joinville, Brazil, after her three-month-old French bulldog puppy swallowed 55 crack cocaine rocks. The puppy, named Antonieta, was rushed to a veterinary clinic on April 17 after showing signs of intoxication.
Medical Discovery
Veterinary examinations revealed foreign objects inside Antonieta, which were surgically removed and identified as crack cocaine rocks. A total of 55 rocks, weighing approximately 12 grams, were extracted. The clinic staff immediately notified the police.
Arrest and Charges
When the woman and her parents returned to the clinic to check on Antonieta, officers arrested the daughter at the scene. She admitted the drugs were hers and now faces charges of animal cruelty and drug trafficking. Her identity and age have not been disclosed. She has been released on bail but must wear an electronic ankle tag and remain at home except for work.
Puppy's Condition Worsens
Antonieta's condition has deteriorated. Veterinary surgeon Lillian Van Den Boom told local media: "She's developed neurological symptoms, and it's progressing very quickly. She's just been seen by a neurologist. Unfortunately, we're going to have to transfer her to intensive care." The surgeon added that the symptoms may be withdrawal-related, noting there are no veterinary studies on such cases. The puppy is experiencing seizure episodes at short intervals.
Additional Concerns
Besides the drugs, the veterinarian discovered Antonieta had not been dewormed or received necessary vaccinations. The clinic, in collaboration with an animal welfare center, is arranging microchipping and preparing the dog for rehoming.
