Dover and Deal Encouraged to Apply for Armed Forces Day Funding

There are pivotal moments in the calendar when a town can truly showcase its character and values. Armed Forces Day represents one such opportunity, and this year, Dover and Deal have a unique chance to create something extraordinary. The Labour Government has unveiled funding of up to £500,000 to support Armed Forces Day celebrations nationwide this summer. This initiative allows local community groups, charities, schools, sports clubs, and councils to apply for grants of up to £10,000. These funds are intended to organise events that unite people in expressing a simple yet profound thank you to those who serve in the armed forces.

Celebrating Service Across Communities

Annually, hundreds of communities throughout Britain commemorate Armed Forces Day in diverse ways. Some opt for grand parades and performances, while others prefer more intimate gatherings like park picnics or seaside barbecues. What truly matters is the underlying spirit: neighbours coming together to honour the men and women who protect the country, as well as the families who support them. As a veteran, my life has been dedicated to service, and in Dover and Deal, we understand the significance of service deeply. Living by the sea, surrounded by history, we boast a proud military tradition that spans generations.

From veterans who have settled here post-service to families currently supporting loved ones in uniform, our armed forces community is integral to our identity. That is why I am urging local groups to step forward and apply for this funding. Whether you are part of a residents’ association, a school PTA, a sports club, or a charity, this is an opportunity to design an event that reflects our area and values.

Event Ideas and Application Details

An Armed Forces Day celebration could feature a variety of activities, such as:

  • Live music performances
  • Stalls operated by veterans’ organisations
  • Displays from local military units
  • Talks from serving personnel about their experiences

These events can be educational, reflective, and joyful all at once. The application deadline is March 30, 2026, providing ample but not excessive time for planning. I am committed to supporting any group that wishes to submit a bid and will assist in making the strongest possible case.

Broader Commitment to Armed Forces Support

This funding is part of a broader pledge to renew the nation’s commitment to those who serve. This includes:

  1. Improving forces’ housing
  2. Delivering the largest pay rise in two decades
  3. Strengthening the Armed Forces Covenant
  4. Backing a new veterans’ strategy

It underscores that support for our armed forces extends beyond military bases, permeating schools, health services, councils, and communities. As Defence Secretary John Healey MP recently stated, our Armed Forces make extraordinary sacrifices to ensure our safety, but they cannot succeed without the backing of families, friends, and communities across the country.

National Celebrations and Local Impact

Armed Forces Day is scheduled for June 27, concluding a week of national celebrations. My hope is that Dover and Deal will be at the forefront of this national moment, proudly flying the flag, welcoming all, and demonstrating gratitude in a manner true to our community. If you support our forces and wish to thank them through a local celebration, now is the time to act. Let us collaborate to make this summer’s Armed Forces Day an event our entire community can take pride in.
