Birmingham man charged with stepbrother's 2022 murder

A Birmingham man has been charged with murdering his stepbrother, more than three years after the victim's tragic death.

Three-Year Investigation Leads to Charges

Kenneth Newton, 57, from Birmingham, now faces multiple charges including murder alongside Melanie James, 63, also from Birmingham. The charges relate to the death of Newton's stepbrother, Rubin Blount, who was 28 years old at the time of the incident.

The case dates back to November 27, 2022, when Staffordshire Police officers responded to concerns about a man's welfare at an address in Tamworth. Emergency services transported Mr Blount to Good Hope Hospital in Sutton Coldfield, but he tragically passed away three days later on November 30.

Multiple Serious Charges Filed

Both Newton and James have been charged with three serious offences: murder, manslaughter, and causing or allowing the death of a child or vulnerable adult.

The police investigation continued for nearly three years before these charges were brought forward. A Staffordshire Police spokesperson confirmed: "A man and a woman have been charged with the murder of a man in Tamworth in 2022."

Court Appearance Scheduled

The accused are due to appear at North Staffordshire Justice Centre tomorrow, Thursday November 20, 2025. This marks the next stage in the legal process following the lengthy investigation into Mr Blount's death.

Staffordshire Police emphasised the connection between the accused and victim, stating: "Rubin Blount, then aged 28, who is the stepbrother of Kenneth, was taken to hospital but sadly died three days later."

The case continues to develop as the judicial process moves forward, bringing some progress in a tragedy that has remained unresolved for three years.
