Birmingham man dies after city centre assault - police probe

A murder investigation has been launched by West Midlands Police following the tragic death of a Birmingham man days after he was brutally assaulted in the city centre.

Adam James, 38, passed away in hospital on Tuesday after suffering serious injuries during an attack on Navigation Street in the early hours of Saturday morning.

Emergency Response and Hospital Battle

Emergency services rushed to the scene near Birmingham New Street station at approximately 1:30am on Saturday, where Mr James was found with critical injuries. Paramedics provided immediate treatment before transporting him to hospital for emergency care.

Despite the best efforts of medical staff, Mr James succumbed to his injuries four days later, leaving family and friends devastated.

Police Appeal for Witnesses

Detective Inspector James Edmonds, from the force's homicide unit, is leading the investigation and has made an urgent appeal for information.

"This is a tragic incident that has resulted in a man losing his life," said DI Edmonds. "We have a team of officers working to establish the circumstances and identify those responsible."

Police are particularly keen to speak to anyone who was in the Navigation Street area between 1am and 2am on Saturday morning, whether they witnessed the assault or have any mobile phone footage that could assist the investigation.

Family's Heartbreaking Loss

In a moving tribute released through West Midlands Police, Adam James's family described their profound grief and remembered him as a beloved family member.

"We are utterly heartbroken by the loss of Adam," the family statement read. "He was a much-loved son, brother and uncle, and his death has left a huge void in our lives. We would ask for privacy at this difficult time as we come to terms with our loss."

City Centre Safety Concerns

The incident has raised concerns about safety in Birmingham's city centre, particularly during night-time hours. The location of the assault, close to one of the city's main transport hubs, has prompted discussions about police presence in the area.

Local authorities have emphasised their commitment to working with West Midlands Police to ensure public safety, while investigators continue their urgent work to bring those responsible to justice.

Anyone with information is urged to contact West Midlands Police immediately, quoting log 149 of 18/03/25.
