Coventry Man Receives Prison Sentence for Disturbing Train Assaults
Esosa Eguakin, a 31-year-old resident of Coventry, has been sentenced to two years imprisonment following his conviction for sexually assaulting two women on separate train journeys. The incidents, described as deeply distressing by authorities, took place during early morning commutes towards London Waterloo.
Chronology of the Attacks
The first assault occurred shortly after 7:15 AM on August 21 last year. Eguakin was traveling on a service from Fratton to London Waterloo when he sexually assaulted a woman in her thirties after positioning himself directly behind her seat.
Less than three months later, at approximately 6:00 AM on October 6, Eguakin targeted a second victim. This assault took place on a train traveling from Eastleigh to London Waterloo. When the woman confronted him about his inappropriate behavior, Eguakin falsely claimed he was merely attempting to retrieve a dropped mobile phone.
Intervention and Arrest
Eguakin refused to move away from the second victim despite her objections. Fortunately, an off-duty police officer who was present on the train intervened promptly. The officer escorted Eguakin off the train at Woking station and placed him under arrest immediately.
The officer maintained custody of Eguakin at the station until additional police personnel arrived to formally take him into custody. British Transport Police detectives subsequently charged Eguakin with two separate counts of sexual assault related to these incidents.
Court Proceedings and Sentencing
Eguakin pleaded guilty to both charges against him. On Tuesday, February 10, Guildford Crown Court delivered its verdict, sentencing him to two years incarceration. In addition to the prison term, the court imposed a five-year Sexual Harm Prevention Order (SHPO) against Eguakin.
This restrictive order specifically prohibits him from sitting or standing adjacent to or opposite any solitary female travelers during its duration. The SHPO represents an additional measure designed to protect potential future victims from similar predatory behavior.
Police Response and Public Safety Message
Detective Constable David Stewart of British Transport Police commented following the court proceedings, stating: "Eguakin's behavior was predatory and deeply distressing for both victims. No one should feel unsafe or be subjected to such violations as they travel."
He continued: "I want to thank the women involved for their courage in supporting our investigation, as well as the off-duty officer whose swift actions prevented further harm. This sentence, along with the SHPO, sends a clear message that we will pursue offenders and ensure they are held to account."
The detective concluded with an important public safety reminder: "If you experience or witness a sexual offence on a train or at a station, please report it to us by texting 61016. In an emergency, always call 999. We take every report seriously and will stop at nothing to bring sexual offenders like Eguakin to justice."
