Farmer in court over £100k tractor flood damage

A Worcestershire farmer has appeared in court, accused of causing an estimated £100,000 worth of damage by driving his tractor through a town centre during severe flooding.

The Alleged Incident During Storm Bert

Simon Morgan, 57, from Tenbury Wells, is alleged to have driven his agricultural vehicle through the floodwaters that had engulfed the town. The incident occurred on 24 November last year, in the wake of 80mph winds from Storm Bert which had caused significant flooding in the area.

It is claimed that the passage of his John Deere tractor created substantial bow waves. The force of these waves is alleged to have smashed the windows of multiple businesses located on Market Street and Teme Street.

Court Appearance and Charges

Morgan stood before Worcester Magistrates' Court on Thursday, where he was formally charged. He faces a total of seventeen charges: sixteen counts of criminal damage and one count of dangerous driving.

Dressed in a suit and tie, the defendant spoke only to confirm his personal details and that he would not be entering a plea at this initial stage. The magistrates' court granted him bail.

What Happens Next?

The case has been elevated to a higher court for trial. Simon Morgan is scheduled to next appear at Worcester Crown Court on 4 December. The upcoming hearing will mark the next step in the legal proceedings concerning the extensive damage to the town's shops.
