Motorists across the UK are being urged to take immediate action as a sophisticated new method of car theft, known as key fob hacking, is driving a dramatic surge in vehicle crime.
Official data reveals that close to two-thirds of all car thefts are now a direct result of this technique, where criminals intercept the signal from a keyless entry fob to unlock and start a vehicle without any physical contact.
The Alarming Rise of Relay Attacks
Technological advancements have provided thieves with a powerful new tool. Thefts have surged by 74% over the last decade, with this 'relay attack' method being largely responsible.
Modern cars with keyless entry systems are particularly susceptible. Criminals use relay devices to capture the faint signal emitted by a key fob, often from inside a home, and amplify it to trick the car into thinking the key is present.
How to Shield Your Car from Thieves
Andy Turbefield, Head of Quality at Halfords, emphasises that protection is both simple and affordable. "The best protection comes from using a Faraday wallet," he stated.
These specially lined cases block electromagnetic signals, preventing them from being intercepted. For them to work effectively, the key must be completely enclosed, as even a small gap can allow a signal to leak.
Andy also highlighted the importance of key storage. "Keys left near doors or windows are particularly vulnerable," he warned. "Keeping them further inside your home or in a Faraday Wallet dramatically reduces the risk."
Visible Deterrents Make a Difference
Beyond signal blocking, physical barriers remain a highly effective deterrent. Turbefield recommends visible security measures like parking posts, which cost around £30.
"When a criminal sees a physical barrier in place, they’re far less likely to target that vehicle," he explained. "It increases the effort and time needed to steal it." These posts are quick to install and offer valuable peace of mind, especially for vehicles parked on driveways.
With car theft evolving, combining these simple, proactive steps can make all the difference in keeping your vehicle safe.
