A 21-year-old man is facing an attempted murder charge following a violent stabbing incident in the heart of Birmingham.
Details of the Attack
The attack occurred on Friday, November 7, at approximately 9pm on Smallbrook Queensway. This location is a major thoroughfare situated close to both the Bullring shopping centre and Birmingham New Street Station.
A woman in her 30s sustained a serious neck injury during the incident. Emergency services rushed her to hospital, where her condition was described as life-threatening and critical.
Charges and Police Response
Djeison Rafael, aged 21 and of no fixed address, was arrested at the scene. He was subsequently charged on Saturday, November 8, with attempted murder.
Rafael, who is described as a Black British national, also faces charges for two further assaults and possession of a blade. He has been remanded in custody and is scheduled to appear before Birmingham magistrates on Monday, November 10.
West Midlands Police have characterised the stabbing as an 'unprovoked attack'.
Appeal for Witnesses
Authorities continue their investigations and are urging witnesses to come forward. They are particularly interested in anyone who saw the incident or the movements of Rafael in the lead-up to the attack.
At the time, he was reportedly wearing an all-grey tracksuit, a black hat, trainers, and a rucksack.
A police cordon was put in place on Smallbrook Queensway following the stabbing, causing disruptions and the diversion of several bus services. The police have not provided a further update on the victim's condition.
