Man Appears in Court After Wife's Body Found in Freezer in Wakefield
David Barraclough, aged 45, has been formally charged with the murder of his wife, Carolann Barraclough, and made an appearance at Leeds Crown Court on Tuesday via video link from HMP Leeds. The case centers on the tragic discovery of Carolann's body, which was found inside a freezer at the couple's residence on Ken Churchill Drive in Wakefield.
Discovery of the Body and Initial Investigation
Officers responded to a concern for safety call on Thursday, March 5, leading to the grim finding at the property. Wakefield Coroner's Court heard last week that Carolann's body was located in a freezer at her home address. Coroner Oliver Longstaff emphasized that the inquest hearing was not making any findings of fact in the ongoing case.
A post-mortem examination has provisionally determined the cause of death as blunt force head trauma, pending further investigation. This detail adds a layer of severity to the charges faced by Mr. Barraclough.
Tributes and Legal Proceedings
Flowers and heartfelt cards left at the scene described Carolann, also known as Caz, as a "beautiful and amazing sister" with a lovely smile, highlighting the community's grief over her loss. In court, Mr. Barraclough was informed that a provisional trial date has been set for October 5 this year, with the trial expected to last approximately two weeks.
The case has been adjourned for reports, and a further case management hearing is scheduled for May 8. His Honour Recorder of Leeds, Judge Guy Kearl KC, addressed Mr. Barraclough, stating, "You will next come before this court on the eighth of May when we will look towards the future stages of this case."
Community Response and Fundraiser
In the wake of this tragedy, a fundraiser has been established in memory of Carolann Barraclough, reflecting the outpouring of support from friends and family. The legal process continues to unfold as authorities work to bring clarity and justice to this distressing incident in Wakefield.
