Man Sentenced to Prison for Machete Threat Against Youths in Colwyn Bay
A 23-year-old man has been handed a 20-month prison sentence after threatening a group of youngsters with a machete in the town centre of Colwyn Bay. The incident, which occurred on the evening of February 17, sparked a significant police response, including the deployment of firearms officers.
Details of the Terrifying Incident
Kyle Jones, of no fixed address, was with another individual in the Abergele Road area when council CCTV operators spotted them appearing to carry a knife. Police were promptly requested to attend Station Road, where the pair were detained following a struggle. Witnesses reported that Jones had been waving the knife aggressively and making threats towards the youths.
According to court proceedings, Jones approached the group and, after an exchange, pursued them to Station Road while brandishing the weapon. Most of the youngsters managed to seek safety inside a nearby shop, but one girl remained trapped outside. She feared for her life as Jones waved the machete and shouted, "I will show you who I am."
Arrest and Court Proceedings
Bodycam footage from North Wales Police showed officers restraining Jones on the ground as they arrested and handcuffed him. Even while being detained, he continued to shout threats. The ordeal unfolded near the Prince Madoc pub before police intervention.
At Caernarfon Crown Court, Judge Timothy Petts noted Jones's "bad track record" and a persistent pattern of carrying knives. The Probation Service assessed him as a high risk to the public, stating there was nothing they could do to contain his risk in the community. Jones pleaded guilty to threatening an individual with a bladed object in a public area.

In sentencing Jones to 20 months in prison, Judge Petts emphasized that a custodial sentence was the only suitable response for such menacing behaviour. A spokesperson for North Wales Police commented, "We will continue to relentlessly pursue those who threaten the safety of our community."
