A dangerous criminal has been removed from the streets of Birmingham after embarking on a terrifying spade-wielding rampage that left multiple victims fearing for their lives.
Kane O'Grady, 31, unleashed a wave of violence across the city in February 2024, armed with a garden spade that he used as a weapon against innocent members of the public. His drug-fuelled rage created scenes of pure terror in residential neighbourhoods.
The Day of Terror Unfolds
O'Grady's reign of terror began when he smashed his way into a property on St Benedict's Road, armed with the deadly garden tool. The horrified occupants were forced to barricade themselves inside as the enraged assailant attempted to break down their door.
But this was only the beginning of his violent spree. The situation escalated dramatically when O'Grady turned his attention to a 72-year-old man who had the misfortune of crossing his path.
Elderly Victim Brutally Attacked
In what prosecutors described as a particularly vicious assault, O'Grady struck the elderly man multiple times with the spade. The shocking attack left the senior citizen with severe injuries to his head, back, and legs, requiring immediate medical attention.
Eyewitnesses described scenes of chaos and horror as O'Grady continued his violent outburst, seemingly without any provocation or reason.
Justice Served at Birmingham Crown Court
O'Grady eventually pleaded guilty to multiple serious offences, including:
- Wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm
- Attempted burglary
- Possession of an offensive weapon
- Criminal damage
At Birmingham Crown Court, Recorder David Mason KC delivered a stern sentence of 12 years imprisonment. The judge emphasised the sheer brutality of O'Grady's actions and the lasting trauma inflicted upon his victims.
A Pattern of Violence
Court records reveal this wasn't O'Grady's first encounter with the justice system. The 31-year-old had previous convictions for violence, including another spade attack in 2018 that resulted in a five-year prison sentence.
This history of violent behaviour contributed to the court's decision to impose a substantial sentence, recognising the clear danger O'Grady poses to the public.
West Midlands Police have welcomed the sentencing, stating that it removes a significant threat from the community and serves as a warning that such brutal violence will not be tolerated on the streets of Birmingham.
