Spice Dealer Found Guilty of Manslaughter After Fatal Stabbing

A drug dealer has been convicted of manslaughter after fatally stabbing a man described by his family as having a 'heart of gold' in his own home. Martin Davies, aged 36, killed 28-year-old Kailem Gibson following a dispute over the synthetic drug Spice at a property in Newton Heath, north Manchester.

Deadly Dispute Over Drug Dealing Arrangements

The court heard that Davies had permitted Kailem Gibson and his girlfriend, both of whom had experienced periods of homelessness, to stay at his flat on Gilmerton Drive. In return for accommodation, Kailem was required to sell Spice on Davies' behalf and both occupants were expected to hand over portions of their benefits.

Prosecutor Tim Storrie KC explained to Manchester Crown Court that tensions developed when Kailem decided to stop working for Davies and the couple began giving their benefits to the property's tenant instead. "The arrangements became the source of tensions, and those tensions brought about the circumstances in which he was to die," Mr Storrie stated.

Violent Confrontation with Fatal Consequences

On August 29, 2025, violence erupted in the bedroom of the property. Kailem Gibson sustained 15 stab wounds or slashes during the attack, with two of the most serious injuries to his chest and neck. A pathologist confirmed these injuries proved fatal.

Kailem's girlfriend intervened during the attack and helped him escape the property. Davies fled the scene with his stock of Spice but was arrested a couple of hours later near the house. When brought to a police station, Davies reportedly said of his victim: "He got what he deserved."

Court Proceedings and Family Tributes

During the trial, Davies claimed he acted in self-defense, alleging that Kailem had attempted to attack him with a hammer. However, the jury unanimously found Davies not guilty of murder but guilty of manslaughter. He was acquitted of two counts of assaulting Kailem's girlfriend and cleared of possessing an offensive weapon in a private place.

In a heartfelt statement following Kailem's death, his family paid tribute to him as a "deeply loved son, brother, father, boyfriend, nephew, cousin and friend." They added: "He touched the lives of everyone he met with his warm smile, kind spirit, and heart of gold. Always willing to lend a hand, Kailem had a gift for making others feel cared for and never hesitated to help anyone in need."

Background of the Living Situation

The court heard that Davies was not the tenant of the property but had been invited to reside there by the actual tenant. Prosecutors alleged Davies was the 'dominant' force in the house, occupying the only bedroom while Kailem and his girlfriend slept in what was described as a 'cupboard'.

Prosecutors stated that business was reportedly good for Davies, who was said to have approximately £29,000 stashed nearby. Kailem handed over his carer's allowance to Davies, while his girlfriend passed on her £400 disability benefit as part of their living arrangement.

Martin Davies now faces a substantial sentence and will be sentenced next month for the manslaughter conviction.
