Visitors Reminded to Stay Safe of Water and Fire Risks at Midlands Country Parks
Stay Safe of Water and Fire Risks at Midlands Parks

Visitors to country parks across the Midlands are being reminded to stay safe around water and fire risks as the summer season approaches. The warning comes from park authorities who are concerned about the potential dangers posed by open fires and swimming in reservoirs.

Water Safety Warnings

Park officials are particularly concerned about people swimming in reservoirs, which can be extremely dangerous due to cold water, hidden currents, and underwater obstacles. Despite the warm weather, the water temperature can remain dangerously low, leading to cold water shock. According to the Royal Life Saving Society UK, around 400 people drown in the UK each year, with many incidents occurring in open water.

Fire Risks

In addition to water safety, visitors are being urged not to light open fires or use disposable barbecues in country parks. Dry conditions and vegetation can easily ignite, leading to wildfires that can spread rapidly and endanger wildlife and visitors. Park authorities are enforcing fines for those caught lighting fires.

Country parks across the Midlands, including those in Staffordshire, Worcestershire, and Warwickshire, have seen an increase in visitors during the summer months. Park rangers are patrolling more frequently to ensure safety guidelines are followed.

Visitor Guidance

Visitors are advised to stick to designated paths, keep dogs on leads near water, and supervise children at all times. They should also bring plenty of water and sun protection, and dispose of litter responsibly. Park authorities emphasize that while they welcome visitors, safety must come first.

A spokesperson for the parks said: "We want everyone to enjoy their visit to our beautiful country parks, but it's essential to be aware of the risks. Please follow the safety advice and help us keep these spaces safe for everyone."
