West Midlands Police have made a significant breakthrough in tackling vehicle crime after discovering half a dozen stolen cars inside a lock-up unit in the Black Country. The vehicles, which had been taken from various locations across the region, were found in the process of being stripped for parts.
Early Morning Raid Leads to Major Discovery
The operation began in the early hours of yesterday morning when officers were alerted to a car stolen from the Bushbury area of Wolverhampton shortly after 12:30am. Police later observed this vehicle entering a lock-up premises on Watery Lane in Willenhall, prompting immediate action.
During a thorough search of the unit, investigators discovered six vehicles that had been confirmed as stolen in the preceding days. The cars originated from multiple locations including Tamworth, Wolverhampton, Dudley, Walsall, and Birmingham, indicating a coordinated criminal operation targeting vehicles across the wider West Midlands area.
Evidence of Systematic Dismantling Operation
Detective Inspector Lee Medlam from Wolverhampton's Priority Crime Team provided details about the discovery, stating: "Each vehicle was in a different state or awaiting dismantling. But we have been able to notify their owners that they have been located."
In addition to the stolen vehicles, police found various car parts at the premises, suggesting the location was being used as a chop shop where stolen vehicles were systematically broken down for components. All recovered items have been seized for further forensic examination and testing as part of the ongoing investigation.
Five Suspects Arrested and Released on Bail
Following the discovery at the Willenhall unit, police arrested five men at a nearby property on suspicion of multiple offences. The charges include handling stolen goods, burglary, and criminal damage related to the vehicle theft operation.
The suspects, aged 67, 46, 40, 34, and 33, have all been released on police bail while investigations continue. This development represents a significant disruption to what appears to have been an organised vehicle crime network operating in the Black Country region.
Police Commitment to Tackling Vehicle Crime
Detective Inspector Medlam emphasised the police force's determination to combat this type of criminal activity, stating: "Vehicle crime is a priority for us and we will act to deter and disrupt those who seek to take others' property for their own profit."
The successful operation demonstrates how targeted police work can recover stolen property and disrupt criminal enterprises that prey on vehicle owners across the West Midlands.
