Teenager Sentenced After College Knife Attack
A 17-year-old boy has been sentenced to a Young Offender Institution after he stabbed another teenager at a college just outside Birmingham city centre.
The violent incident took place on September 10, prompting emergency services to rush to Summer Row at around 3.30pm.
Emergency Response and Investigation
Upon arrival, police and paramedics discovered a 17-year-old victim with knife wounds. He was promptly taken to hospital for treatment, where it was confirmed that, thankfully, his injuries were not life-threatening.
An immediate investigation was launched by the police. Officers spoke to dozens of witnesses who were at the scene and established that the stabbing was linked to an argument between two groups that had occurred earlier that day.
A thorough trawl of CCTV footage was conducted, which led to the identification and subsequent arrest of a 17-year-old male suspect.
Court Sentencing and Police Statement
The defendant, who cannot be named due to his age, was charged with wounding with intent and possession of an offensive weapon.
He pleaded guilty to the charges and was sentenced at Birmingham Crown Court on Thursday, November 6. The court handed down a sentence of two years and ten months in a Young Offender Institution.
Inspector Michael Wright, from the Birmingham Organised Crime and Gangs Team, commented on the case, stating: “We work hard with young people in Birmingham and across the West Midlands to educate them on the dangers of carrying a weapon – and sadly this is a clear reminder of the consequences it can have.”
He added, “The boy that was hurt could easily have been more seriously injured, and I am pleased that our investigation has led to the offender being sentenced for his actions.”
The incident caused significant disruption, with one witness confirming that the college was evacuated. Another reported a substantial police presence, including two police vans and five police cars at the scene.
