A pensioner in his 70s has tragically died after being punched in Cheltenham, leading to the arrest of two teenage boys on suspicion of murder. The incident occurred following an altercation that began when a group threw a large branch at a cyclist from a bridge.

Details of the Fatal Incident

Police were called to Millennium Bridge in Cheltenham at approximately 7:30 PM on Wednesday, April 8, following reports of an incident involving three males. According to authorities, two males on the bridge threw a large branch at a cyclist traveling on the road below. Fortunately, the cyclist was not injured.

The suspects then left the bridge and were approached by the victim, a man in his 70s, on Honeybourne Way. An exchange took place between them, during which one of the males punched the victim in the face, causing him to fall to the ground. The suspects fled the scene before officers arrived.

Police Investigation and Arrests

The victim was taken to Gloucestershire Royal Hospital in critical condition and sadly passed away earlier today, Friday, April 10. His next of kin and the coroner have been informed.

Following police enquiries at the scene and a review of CCTV footage, images of the suspects were released to the public to aid in identification. Thanks to information provided by the public, a 17-year-old boy was arrested last night, Thursday, and a 16-year-old boy was arrested in the early hours of this morning, Friday. Both boys were arrested in Cheltenham and remain in police custody after being recharged with murder, having initially been arrested on suspicion of causing grievous bodily harm.
