West Bromwich Family Disco Murder: Killers Sentenced to Over 50 Years

Three men and a teenage boy have been handed life sentences totaling more than 50 years for the murder of a father during a family disco in West Bromwich. The brutal attack, which unfolded at The Gough Arms pub, has been described by the sentencing judge as involving 'gratuitous' violence of a 'sickening nature'.

The Fatal Attack at The Gough Arms

Matthew Adams, 33, was subjected to a 'punishment beating' by John Wise, Ryan Stanley, Mark Shorthouse, and a teenage boy who cannot be named due to his age. The violence erupted after the group hurled abuse at Mr. Adams' partner, Amie Poll, during the family event in the early hours of March 19, 2023.

When Mr. Adams lunged forward to defend his partner, the attackers saw this as justification for their revenge. They deliberately moved the assault to the car park, away from staff, where they punched, kicked, and stamped on Mr. Adams until he was motionless and bleeding on the ground.

Court Proceedings and Sentences

At Wolverhampton Crown Court, Wise (43), Shorthouse (54), and Ryan Stanley (31) were all convicted of murder and violent disorder. They received life sentences with minimum terms of 15 years each. The teenage boy, who was 14 at the time of the attack, was detained for life with a minimum term of seven years.

Nichola Stanley, 40, was convicted of violent disorder and sentenced to 20 months in prison. Judge Michael Chambers KC stated that the defendants acted 'like a pack' to effect retribution, with no intention to kill but simply to cause really serious harm.

Aftermath and Medical Details

Mr. Adams initially believed he could 'sleep it off' after the savage beating, as he was due to start a new job. He visited his GP and was prescribed painkillers, but collapsed four days later and died. The cause of death was a combination of lung infection and excessive codeine.

The court heard that Mr. Adams suffered:

  • A significant brain injury
  • Extensive deep bruising to his head and body
  • A fractured eye socket

Prosecutor Annabel Darlow KC detailed how the defendants closed in on the victim, incited him, and then launched their attack as a group. Ryan Stanley held Mr. Adams still so Wise could repeatedly punch him in the head, while the violence escalated in the car park with repeated punches and kicks from all attackers.

Judge's Remarks on the Case

Judge Chambers emphasized that this was not a case of self-defense but a 'punishment beating'. He noted that the five defendants were the aggressors, jointly involved in abusive language toward Ms. Poll, which prompted Mr. Adams' reaction.

The judge stated: 'The five of you played your part in what was a joint, brutal and sustained assault on Mr. Adams, acting as a pack, in effect, to effect retribution because he had the audacity to challenge the abuse of his partner.'

He added that the attack was clearly not premeditated but was sustained and brutal, with the defendants showing no interest in their victim's wellbeing after leaving him injured on the ground.
