Police in Greater Manchester have launched an urgent investigation following a disturbing attempted kidnapping in the centre of Wigan last week. A woman was reportedly grabbed and threatened by an unknown man in an early morning attack.

Details of the Early Morning Attack

The incident occurred on Central Park Way in Wigan on the morning of Friday, 9 January 2026. According to a statement from Greater Manchester Police (GMP), the victim was walking alone when she was targeted by a man between 6.05am and 6.20am.

The suspect attempted to force her to go with him, grabbing her and issuing threats. In a frightening ordeal, the woman managed to break free from his grip and escape to a place of safety. The assailant then left the area.

Police Description of the Suspect

Officers from GMP's Wigan Criminal Investigation Department (CID) have released a detailed description of the man they wish to trace in connection with this serious incident. He is described as:

  • A white male.
  • Approximately 6 feet 1 inch tall.
  • Wearing grey jogging bottoms, black trainers, a yellow hi-vis vest, and a black beanie hat.

Detective Sergeant Andrew Partington, of GMP's Wigan CID, is leading the enquiry. He stated: "Whilst we understand incidents of this nature are concerning, I want to reassure our communities that we take reports of this nature very seriously and the safety of the public is our top priority."

Appeal for Witnesses and Increased Patrols

Specialist officers are providing support to the victim as the investigation continues. Police are now appealing to the public for any information that could assist their enquiries.

Detective Sergeant Partington confirmed that multiple lines of enquiry are being pursued and that extra patrols have been deployed in the area to provide reassurance. He added: "Our officers are taking every measure and following multiple lines of enquiry to investigate the circumstances of this incident. We have extra patrols in place around the area and if you have any concerns, our officers are always more than happy to support."

Anyone who was in the vicinity of Central Park Way in the early hours of last Friday, or who may have dashcam or CCTV footage, is urged to contact Greater Manchester Police immediately.
