A woman has been charged following an incident in Birmingham where 12 West Midlands Police officers were assaulted. The alleged assaults took place on Saturday, 15 March, with the woman now appearing before magistrates.
Details of the Incident
The incident occurred in the Sparkhill area of Birmingham. Police were called to a disturbance at around 8pm on Saturday evening. Upon arrival, officers were met with aggressive behaviour, leading to multiple officers being assaulted.
The 35-year-old woman, who has been named as Kelly Marie Smith, of no fixed address, was arrested at the scene. She has since been charged with 12 counts of assaulting an emergency worker, as well as one count of criminal damage.
Court Appearance
Smith appeared at Birmingham Magistrates' Court on Monday, 17 March. She was remanded in custody and is due to appear at Birmingham Crown Court on a later date.
West Midlands Police have condemned the attacks, stating that assaults on officers will not be tolerated. A spokesperson said: "Our officers were simply doing their job, responding to a call for help. To be met with such violence is completely unacceptable."
The force has also praised the bravery of the officers involved, who continued to carry out their duties despite the injuries sustained. The extent of the officers' injuries has not been disclosed, but they are said to be recovering.
