A historic Brentwood building that has served the community for over three centuries is undergoing a significant transformation, promising a vibrant new future.
From Worship to Dance, and Back Again
For more than 300 years, a church has stood on the site adjacent to the green on Coptfold Road. The most recent incarnation, the United Reform Church, was a familiar landmark for thousands of local residents. Its uses extended beyond Sunday services, having once housed the popular Central School of Dance where many learned ballet and tap.
However, as the congregation of the United Reform Church gradually dwindled, the building was no longer a viable place of worship for them and was subsequently put up for sale.
A New Congregation Steps In
The future of the listed building is now secure, having been acquired by Immanuel Church Brentwood. This congregation, which previously met in various hired halls and school spaces around the town, will now have a permanent home. The project ensures the site will continue its long legacy as a centre for worship and community life.
The refurbishment work is being managed by retired chartered building surveyor and church member, Jeremy Kingston, alongside Carl Taylor of Gipping Construction. The project is overseen by the church's minister, Reverend Andrew Grey.
Respecting History, Embracing the Future
When discussing the plans, Rev. Andrew Grey explained the vision is to sensitively bring the historic structure into the 21st century. The aim is to honour its past while adapting it for its future role as a faith-based community hub designed to bring local people and worshippers together.
This impressive restoration project represents a major investment of money, time, and faith by Immanuel Church Brentwood into preserving a key piece of local heritage. The work is clearly visible to users of the multi-storey car park on Coptfold Road, who have a bird's-eye view of the progress.
The community can anticipate the revived building opening its doors in late spring, ready to start its next chapter serving the people of Brentwood and its surrounding areas in Essex.
