History Talk on Denbigh School's WWI Letters Discovery

Local History Society Welcomes Back Esteemed Speaker for WWI Talk

The Llandyrnog & Llangwyfan Local History Society is set to host a captivating event featuring the return of a popular speaker, Dr Paul Evans. With a deep-rooted passion for history, Dr Evans has an impressive background in education and authorship, making this talk a must-attend for history enthusiasts.

Dr Paul Evans: A Distinguished Educator and Historian

Originally from Carmel, Dr Paul Evans dedicated two decades to teaching at Ysgol Brynhyfryd before transitioning to Denbigh High School. Over 13 years at Denbigh High, he ascended through senior management roles, culminating in his appointment as headteacher in March 2018. His expertise is widely recognized, having authored 29 textbooks and revision guides focused on Thomas Pennant, showcasing his commitment to historical scholarship.

Uncovering Forgotten Stories from the Great War

At this upcoming meeting, Dr Evans will delve into the topic "Old boys of Denbigh County School during the Great War 1914-18". The talk centers on a remarkable discovery in a school storeroom: a trove of letters written by former students serving in World War I. These poignant correspondences, sent from trenches, hospitals, and prison camps, were responses to letters and postal orders from current schoolchildren, who raised funds to send 4 shillings and 6 pence to their predecessors.

Unfortunately, the letters from the children to the soldiers have been lost to time, leaving gaps in this historical narrative. Tragically, twenty-two men with connections to Llandyrnog and Llangwyfan perished during the war, and it remains unknown if they received any correspondence. Their stories, however, are preserved in the society's published book, Llandyrnog & Llangwyfan - Y Rhyfel Mawr 1914-18 The Great War, available for £14 at the Llandyrnog Community Shop or via email.

Event Details and Community Engagement

The talk will take place at Llandyrnog Village Hall on Wednesday, March 18, starting at 7pm. Admission is priced at £3 for visitors, while members enjoy free entry; annual membership costs £8 for access to four meetings. Following the presentation, light refreshments will be served, providing an opportunity for networking and discussion.
