Lichfield Launches Heritage Shopfront Scheme to Protect Historic Streets
A major initiative to safeguard the historic character of Lichfield city centre has been launched, with a consultation now underway on a new shopfront design code and grant program. Council leaders are expected to approve the scheme next week, aiming to enhance the appearance of shopfronts while preserving the traditional streetscene of this Staffordshire city.
Design Code and Grant Program Details
The proposed design code will provide businesses with clear guidance on creating and maintaining high-quality, attractive frontages that align with Lichfield's historic aesthetic. Although participation is voluntary, the council is actively collaborating with local traders to ensure proposed improvements meet the new design standards.
Alongside the design code, a new grant scheme is set to be approved, encouraging property owners and tenants to restore shopfronts to their original heritage appearance. A capital budget of £900,000, approved in the recent council budget, will fund this grant program. Based on this funding, it is estimated that up to 60 shopfronts could receive support.
Eligibility and Use of Grant Funds
To qualify for the grant scheme, properties must be located within Lichfield city centre conservation area and owned by independent businesses or community-run enterprises with shopfronts accessible to the public. Grant money can be allocated toward various restoration efforts, including:
- Restoration and reinstatement of traditional timber shopfronts
- Application of heritage-appropriate paint colours
- Improvements to accessibility features
- Installation of hand-painted or traditional fascia signs
Council Support and Community Impact
Councillor Richard Holland, Cabinet Member for High Street and Economic Development, emphasized the significance of this initiative. "Lichfield's historic streets are a huge part of what makes our city so special, and they are something residents are rightly proud of," he stated. "This scheme is about celebrating that heritage while supporting our local businesses to thrive."
He further explained, "By providing clear guidance and practical financial support, we're making it easier for traders to enhance their shopfronts in a way that respects the character of our historic centre. A more attractive and welcoming high street benefits everyone – from businesses and residents to visitors who come to enjoy everything Lichfield has to offer."
Consultation Timeline
The design code consultation is currently open and will run until 22 April. Residents and business owners are encouraged to review the proposed guidelines and submit their feedback to help shape the final version of the heritage shopfront design code and grant scheme.
