MP Helps Raise Union Jack at Dover Castle After Resident Concerns
Dover has always been a location where history feels remarkably tangible and accessible. Few landmarks embody this sensation more powerfully than the magnificent Dover Castle. Standing proudly above the town, it serves as an iconic visual reminder of the crucial role Dover has played in Britain's national story for many centuries.
I recently had the distinct pleasure of visiting the castle and spending valuable time with the dedicated team responsible for its daily care and maintenance. Anyone who has visited will understand just how impressive the site truly is. This impression stems not only from its immense scale and excellent preservation but also from the palpable energy and passion exhibited by the staff who keep the castle operational.

The team is continuously working to enhance visitor facilities and create innovative new experiences. This ongoing work is of enormous significance.

Prior to my visit, I had received numerous emails from residents all raising the same specific concern: the Union Jack was not flying over the castle. For many people living in Dover, that flag represents more than just a national symbol. It is an integral part of the familiar skyline they have grown up with. I completely understood the reason behind these inquiries and was determined to investigate the matter promptly.
Upon my arrival, the castle team provided a clear explanation. The wind conditions on the hilltop can sometimes become extremely powerful, strong enough to pose a genuine risk of damaging both the flag itself and the flagpole. On such days, flying the flag is simply not safe. This is a practical decision made to protect the equipment and the historic integrity of the site itself.
A Special Moment for the Community
Fortunately, on the day of my visit, the weather was cooperative. With the wind calm enough to allow safe display, the conditions were perfectly right. I was therefore delighted to personally assist in raising the Union Jack over Dover Castle. Watching it unfurl against the sky above the town was a profoundly special moment.
My role as the Member of Parliament for Dover and Deal is fundamentally to serve my constituents. Raising the flag over the town, in direct response to the requests of so many residents, felt precisely like the kind of representative service I was elected to perform. Standing there, gazing out across Dover and the English Channel beyond, served as a powerful reminder of everything this town symbolizes: resilience, a deep connection to history, and immense pride in our local identity.
