Cotswolds Palm Tree Row: 'This is not Dubai' Cry Bibury Locals
Bibury residents blast 'out of place' illuminated palm trees

A fierce row has erupted in the picture-postcard Cotswolds village of Bibury, where residents claim the area's cherished character is being spoiled by a controversial home renovation featuring illuminated palm trees.

'Sheer Hell' Renovation Sparks Outrage

The dispute centres on a cottage undergoing extensive works on Awkward Hill, directly impacting the famed Arlington Row – widely considered England's most picturesque street. Neighbours have described the project, ongoing since 2023, as 'sheer hell', citing persistent noise, disruption, and traffic problems.

However, the latest flashpoint is the presence of two tall palm trees adorned with fairy lights at the property. Villagers argue the illuminated trees are 'so out of place' in the traditional Cotswolds setting, with some suggesting they belong in destinations like Dubai or Benidorm.

A Clash of Perspectives

Local writer and Bibury resident Victoria Summerley stated: "Because these are the only two trees left standing here, they are particularly noticeable, and the fairy lights on them make them even more noticeable still. I don't think anyone with any sense could argue that two tall palm trees enhance or preserve the character of a three-bed cottage in the Cotswolds."

In defence, Matthew Hollingsworth of Spirit Architecture Ltd, representing the owners, offered a different view. He pointed out: "One commenter refers to the palm trees on site, this is an odd comment as these have been there for well over 20 years and my client has tried to retain these as they are part of the history of the building."

Public Reaction and Wider Impact

Online commentary has been divided. While some criticised the aesthetic, with one person writing "Looks like Dubai on your doorstep!" and another stating "Would look better in Benidorm Spain", others offered support. A defender commented: "I think it's amazing they have survived for so long in the UK climate. Shame to chop them down. They look great."

The situation has become so tense that some distressed neighbours on Arlington Row are reportedly contemplating selling their homes. The property owners, identified as a wealthy couple from Turkey, have faced previous criticism over the scale of the renovations, previously labelled as creating a 'war zone' atmosphere in the tranquil village.

The clash highlights the ongoing tension between property owners' rights and preserving the historic character of one of England's most iconic and photographed locations.
