The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) has issued a crucial update for households across the UK, warning that special Cold Weather Payments could be triggered imminently. This alert comes as forecasters predict a severe Arctic blast is set to hit the country next week, bringing the first major cold snap of the winter season.
What are Cold Weather Payments?
These emergency payments are designed to provide vital financial support to low-income households during periods of exceptionally cold weather. The scheme offers £25 for each seven-day period where the average local temperature is recorded as, or forecast to be, 0°C or below.
The payments are intended to help vulnerable people, including pensioners and those on certain benefits, afford to keep their heating on during dangerously cold conditions, thereby protecting health and wellbeing.
Who is eligible for the payment?
You do not need to apply for the payment; it is issued automatically if you qualify. Eligibility is linked to receiving one of the following benefits:
- Pension Credit
- Universal Credit
- Income Support
- Employment and Support Allowance (ESA)
The Government states: "You may get Cold Weather Payments if you’re getting certain benefits. If you’re eligible, you’ll get these payments automatically."
When and where will payments be made?
The scheme is active from November 1, 2025, to March 31, 2026. Payments are hyper-local, based on temperature data from specific weather stations. This means that not everyone will receive a payment at the same time unless a widespread freeze grips the entire nation.
With temperatures expected to plunge next week, struggling to rise above 5°C during the day and dipping below freezing overnight, the conditions for triggering these payments are becoming highly likely in many areas.
This early warning from the DWP allows vulnerable households to prepare for the incoming cold spell and be aware of the potential financial support available to them.
