Lad in the Lane Pub to Become Offices and Women's Shelter

Urgent repair work is underway at Erdington's historic Lad in the Lane pub, one of Birmingham's oldest, as plans emerge to transform the Grade II-listed building into offices and supported accommodation for vulnerable women.

Plans for the Historic Pub

The Grade II-listed building, which closed in 2019 and claims to be Birmingham's oldest pub dating back to around 1400, has been falling into disrepair for six years. A planning application has been lodged with Birmingham City Council to convert the 14th-century boozer into office space on the ground floor. The proposals also include supported accommodation for vulnerable women on the ground and first floor levels.

Repair Work Underway

The building owner has recently begun vital repair work following community concerns about its deteriorating condition. The pub suffered a blaze in 2024 but did not appear to sustain serious external damage when visited by BirminghamLive. Historian Carl Chinn described it as a "special building" and "really important landmark" for Erdington residents.

Community Concerns

Coun Basharat Mahmood said "many residents" had contacted him with concerns about the former pub's condition. The historic site is often cited alongside The Old Crown in Digbeth as potentially Birmingham's oldest boozer.

Next Steps

The planning application will appear publicly on the council's website once outstanding information is submitted by the applicant.
