Youth Leader and Nurse Get University of Derby Honorary Awards

An inspiring youth charity leader and an exceptional community nurse are among the regional heroes who will receive special honorary awards from the University of Derby. The proud recipients are being celebrated for their life-changing work across Derbyshire over several decades. A dedicated local primary school is also being recognised for its long-term work in boosting opportunities for children. Thousands of students and guests are expected to attend the special celebrations in the city.

Honorary Doctorate for Gillian Sewell

Gillian Sewell, who has spent more than 30 years helping young people through her leadership of YMCA Derbyshire, will receive an Honorary Doctorate. During her long career, she led major building projects to provide affordable homes and pathways into education and employment for young people. She also founded a specialist local college and established a memorial trust in memory of her late son to support aspiring performers.

Jackie Brocklehurst Honored with Master of Science

Former NHS leader Jackie Brocklehurst will also receive an Honorary Master of Science after working as a registered nurse for 43 years. Jackie was awarded the prestigious title of Queen's Nurse in 2017 to celebrate her excellence in patient care and clinical leadership. Alongside her healthcare career, she spent nearly 40 years volunteering with Girlguiding to support and empower young women across the Midlands.

Other Honorees in Film, Education, and Law

Three other exceptional people will receive honorary degrees for their dedication to film, education, and legal work. They include filmmaker Emeritus Professor Huw Davies, former university registrar June Hughes, and former Rolls-Royce general counsel Mark Gregory.

Firs Primary School Receives Partnership Award

Firs Primary School will receive the special partnership award for its long-standing collaboration with the institution to improve social mobility and inclusivity. The school has consistently supported students, shared best practice, and worked on important regional research projects.
