Balloon Tribute Honors Paul Pike as Volunteers Remember Teen Football Fan

Balloons were launched into the sky in a poignant tribute to a teenage Birmingham City supporter who went to a football match and never returned home. Volunteers who assisted in the search for 18-year-old Paul Pike gathered at the location where his body was discovered to pay their respects on Wednesday, March 31.

Search and Discovery

Paul Pike had traveled to watch Birmingham City play against Derby County at Pride Park Stadium on March 21. He left the stadium shortly after kick-off and was not seen again. A body believed to be his was found in the River Derwent on Sunday, March 29. Floral tributes were placed along a riverside path near the discovery site, as reported by Derbyshire Live.

Memorial Gathering

A brief memorial event took place at the same spot, where self-evaporating balloons were released into the air. Derby fan Joanne Wallis, who organized the searches involving approximately 50 volunteers over the past week, arranged the gathering at the riverbank.

"After five days of searching, hoping and praying for a miracle, our worst fears were confirmed when Paul was found in the river," she said. "Please continue to keep Paul's loved ones in your thoughts and respect their privacy as they face the most heart-breaking time of their lives. Rest peacefully, Paul. You were cared about by so many."

Community Response

People also turned to social media to express their condolences. One person wrote: "A lovely gesture. So very sad, sending sincere condolences to Paul's family, friends and his fellow Blues fans." Another commented: "So tragic! Thinking of everyone who knew him friends, family and fans alike." A third added: "It's great to see two football team supporters coming together and showing this young man respect. It proves in a world of hate there is still respect. Well done to you all."

Future Tributes

Rams supporters' group Popside Fanatics plan to honor Paul in the 18th minute of Derby's match against Stoke City at Pride Park on Monday, April 6. Birmingham City fans are set to march from the St Anne's club in Digbeth to St Andrew's before the home game against Blackburn on Good Friday.
