A beloved London playground dedicated to the memory of Diana, Princess of Wales has reopened its gates following a major £3 million refurbishment. The iconic site in Kensington Gardens, which attracts around one million visitors annually, has been transformed with a stunning new centrepiece.
A New Ship Sets Sail for Imagination
Closed for renovation in the autumn of 2025, the playground's most significant new attraction is a magnificent wooden galleon. In a touching nod to the site's history, the ship was constructed by the same skilled German craftsmen from Frasdorf who built the original Peter Pan-themed vessel for the playground's opening in 2000.
Park manager for Kensington Gardens, Andy Williams, emphasised the ship's purpose, stating it "really reaches to children's imaginations, it lets them set free in a safe space." He added that the entire new playground design remains "in the spirit of Princess Diana, we've kept faithful to that."
Durable Design and Inclusive Features
Crafted from robust mountain larch wood, known for its strength and durability, the new galleon is built to last. The design thoughtfully incorporates wheelchair accessible spaces, ensuring all children can enjoy the adventure. Key features that will spark young imaginations include:
- A towering crow's nest for lookout duty.
- A double-storey stern for extended exploration.
- A traditional ship's wheel and telescope for navigation.
Located next to Princess Diana's former home at Kensington Palace, the playground is officially recognised by The Royal Parks as the UK's most visited park. The substantial investment was essential to revamp the well-loved equipment after decades of enjoyment by countless children.
A Lasting Legacy for Future Generations
The completion of this significant project ensures the playground continues to honour Diana's legacy of joy and compassion for children. The refurbishment not only preserves the magic of the original concept but enhances it with modern, inclusive design, guaranteeing the site remains a premier destination for family adventure in the heart of London for years to come.
