A Birmingham couple have shared the secret to a long-lasting marriage as they celebrate their 70th anniversary. Maureen and Wes Jordan met when they were 19 and 20 respectively, marrying in 1956 at St Mark’s Church in Smethwick.
Seven decades have passed, yet the love the pair share remains evident. Wes, now 92, remains devoted, paying regular visits to his wife at Care UK’s Metchley Manor in Edgbaston, where she resides. Although they do not live together, Wes is a constant presence in her life.
To commemorate their milestone, the home's head chef prepared a special meal for the couple. Sharing the secret to a happy marriage, they said: “Respect each other’s needs and always be honest with one another.”
Wes recalled their first meeting in the 1950s, saying, “I immediately felt comfortable with Maureen, and that feeling has never gone away.” Maureen added, “Neither of us can imagine being with anyone else.”
Kim-Marie Newton, home manager at Metchley Manor, said: “We were absolutely delighted to celebrate the love between Maureen and Wes. Marking big milestones is really important to us here. We know just how much the memory of their wedding day means to them, which is why we decided to surprise them with a special meal. It was truly a privilege to listen to the memories and wisdom Maureen and Wes shared with us. Happy 70th anniversary to you both!”
