Historic Newark Theatre Receives Vital Funding for Stage Drapes

The Robin Hood Theatre in Newark is celebrating a generous £1,000 donation from The Wilkins Group, which will fund new stage drapes for the beloved community venue. This contribution marks the first installment of the company's 2025 12 Months of Giving initiative, which this year focuses on supporting local arts and talent.

Supporting a Community Landmark

Founded in 1913, the Robin Hood Theatre is a historic institution that hosts five annual productions of its own, alongside visiting shows, dance schools, the local Women's Institute, and tribute acts. The theatre relies on around 100 dedicated volunteers, some with decades of service, who handle everything from stage management to front-of-house duties.

The new stage drapes, which can cost over £10,000, are a crucial upgrade for the venue. Theatre trustee Jean Baliol-Key emphasized the impact, stating, "The new stage drapes will make a real difference to our productions, helping us maintain the character of our historic building while adding a touch of theatre magic. With this donation, we can keep welcoming performers, audiences and volunteers alike and ensure the show truly goes on."

A Commitment to Local Arts

The Wilkins Group, a food packaging producer for brands like Pukka Pies, Pizza Express, Harrods, and Cadbury, launched its 12 Months of Giving program in 2025 with a focus on nature and conservation. This year, the initiative has shifted to highlight arts and community talent, with plans to donate £1,000 each month to 12 different charities.

Justin Wilkins of The Wilkins Group praised the theatre as a "local gem that brings the community together," adding, "We are proud to play a part in keeping this historic venue alive and ensuring it continues to entertain and inspire for generations to come."

Future Plans and Community Impact

Theatre chairman Geoff Morgan outlined the venue's broader goals, noting, "Our plan is to replace our drapes and then move onto the seating. The theatre attracts people from all over Newark and we really are at the heart of the community. Support like this is invaluable and we would like to thank the team at The Wilkins Group."

This donation not only enhances the theatre's productions but also reinforces its role as a cultural hub, ensuring it remains a vibrant space for performances that delight audiences of all ages. The funding will help preserve the theatre's historic charm while supporting its ongoing operations and community engagement efforts.
