Victoria Beckham has stated that being a mother is 'never about being pushy' and that she and husband Sir David Beckham do not put any 'pressure' on their children. Her comments come months after eldest son Brooklyn Peltz Beckham took to social media to accuse his parents of controlling narratives in the press about his family and trying to 'ruin' his relationship with wife Nicola.
In a post shared on Instagram in January, Brooklyn claimed his family values 'public promotion and endorsements above all else', adding that 'Brand Beckham comes first'. Speaking on Emma Grede’s Aspire podcast, the former Spice Girls star said she is 'proud' of all of her children, adding: 'Being very close is really really important to us and just ultimately we want the kids to be hardworking, kind.'
'I’ve always wanted to be the best mum that I could be and look after the kids but I also feel that it’s been part of my job to really help them fulfil their full potential and for them to recognise what their sense of purpose is,' she said. 'With Cruz, for example, it was his music. And anything that I could do to support him, to encourage and to help him, that’s my job as his mum. It’s never about being pushy or forcing, it’s being there to support.'
Lady Beckham and former England player Sir David—famously known as Posh and Becks—share four children together: Brooklyn, 27, Romeo, 23, Cruz, 21, and Harper, 14. Their youngest son Cruz has followed in his mother's footsteps and has pursued a career as the frontman of Cruz Beckham and The Breakers.
Lady Beckham acknowledged her children have had a 'very different upbringing' to her and Sir David, 50. She added: 'I think the world is a very different place now, to what it was when they were younger, and we’ve always tried to protect the children as much as we can.' Posh Spice said the family have 'always been really close' and are 'quite traditional'.
Asked how the scrutiny she faces has shaped how she is as a mother, Lady Beckham said: 'I think that it’s very different parenting adult children to parenting smaller children and you know I’m just trying to do the best that I can, you know, and they grew up so quickly. It’s my job to make sure that my kids are the best versions of themselves and that they feel fulfilled. You know I always encourage them to dream big and then dream even bigger.'
The fashion designer added: 'The greatest compliment… is when someone will say “I met your kids and they were great kids”. We don’t put any pressure on our kids, we just want them to do what they love and to work hard and to be happy.'
Lady Beckham addressed the concept of 'Brand Beckham' and said: 'When myself and David first met it was never the intention to start a brand. You know people talk about Brand Beckham, and that has happened so organically.' She said that it 'was never something that we together ever even discussed', adding that 'we’re a couple of builders that’s what we do'.
It comes after social media posts saw Brooklyn say he has been 'controlled by my parents for most of my life' and that he did not want to 'reconcile' with his family. Brooklyn was contacted for comment, the Press Association said.
