DWP Admits 900,000 Pensioners Missing Out on £4,300 Annual Pension Credit

The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) has made a stark admission that nearly one million eligible state pensioners are missing out on a crucial financial boost. According to recent figures, around 910,000 families who qualify for Pension Credit are not applying, leaving them without an average annual payment of £4,300.

Massive Unclaimed Sums Highlighted

The DWP estimates that up to £2.5 billion in Pension Credit goes uncollected each year. This benefit provides a top-up for single people receiving the new state pension whose weekly income falls below £238, with couples needing a combined income under £363.25 to qualify. The income threshold can be slightly higher for those claiming disability-related benefits or with caring responsibilities.

David Cooper, director at retirement specialist Just Group, commented on the situation, stating, "The figures show the huge sums of Pension Credit that are going unclaimed by many of the nation's poorest pensioners, who are missing out on thousands of pounds a year of valuable extra income." He added, "The benefits system is complicated and anyone feeling the squeeze on their finances should check their entitlement to benefits."

Eligibility Criteria Explained

To qualify for Pension Credit, individuals must:

  • Live in the UK – England, Scotland, Wales, or Northern Ireland.
  • Have reached State Pension age, typically born before 1960.
  • Have a weekly income below £238 if single, or £363 if in a couple.

For couples, both partners must have reached state pension age, and they do not need to be married or in a civil partnership; living together qualifies them as a couple. One partner applies and provides income and savings details for both.

Political and Expert Responses

Labour Party Work and Pensions Secretary Pat McFadden addressed the issue, saying, "I know global shocks, and the effects they have on our living costs, will be increasing anxiety for many households." He emphasized, "This Government will always protect our pensioners."

Money Saving Expert, founded by BBC and ITV star Martin Lewis, advises, "If you're in this position we suggest checking if you have an income under £250 a week if you're single or £380 a week if you're in a couple." This guidance aims to help pensioners navigate the complex benefits system and ensure they receive the support they are entitled to.

The admission from the DWP underscores a significant gap in benefit uptake, with hundreds of thousands of retirees, particularly those born before 1960, missing out on substantial financial aid. Experts urge eligible individuals to review their circumstances and apply for Pension Credit to secure this vital income boost.
