DWP Urges Pensioners to Claim £83 Weekly Income Boost
DWP: Claim Your £83 Weekly Pension Credit Boost

The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) has launched a fresh appeal to hundreds of thousands of state pensioners across Britain, urging them to come forward for a significant income boost they may be missing.

New analysis reveals stark regional disparities, with many eligible pensioners, particularly in the South West, failing to claim Pension Credit, a benefit worth an average of £83 per week.

The Postcode Lottery of Pension Credit

Recent figures paint a concerning picture of unequal uptake across the country. In the South West, just over half of those thought to be eligible are currently receiving the payment.

This contrasts sharply with regions like the North East, which boasts the highest take-up rate in the country at 71%. In London and other parts of the North, the claim rate sits between 60% and 70%.

This means where a pensioner lives significantly impacts their likelihood of receiving this crucial financial support.

New Trial Aims to Bridge the Gap

In a direct response to these findings, the DWP is initiating a targeted trial. As part of this new drive, letters will be sent to 2,000 pensioners across England who have been identified as highly likely to be eligible for Pension Credit but are not yet claiming it.

The department has collaborated with charities Age UK and Independent Age on this initiative. The goal is to help people claim what they are rightfully entitled to, with the benefit topping up income by an average of £4,300 a year.

This follows a successful campaign between 2023 and 2024, which saw an additional 56,700 households awarded Pension Credit.

Charities Welcome "Positive Step" Amid Cost of Living Crisis

Morgan Vine, director of policy and influencing at Independent Age, emphasised the urgency of the situation. "If you're in financial hardship, where you live shouldn't be a factor in whether or not you receive the money you're entitled to, but at the moment, it is," she stated.

She highlighted the pressure of the continued high cost of living, noting that older people cannot afford to miss out on any money they are eligible for.

Vine described the trial as a "positive step" and urged the UK Government to continue building on this strategic approach. The DWP has indicated that further initiatives could be rolled out if this trial proves successful.
