Pre-1946 State Pensioners May Qualify for Additional DWP Payments
The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) offers a special 'Over 80 Pension' designed to provide financial support to older retirees on the basic state pension rate. This initiative specifically targets individuals born before 1946, who might be missing out on valuable top-up cash that could enhance their weekly income.
Weekly Payment and Basic Eligibility Criteria
Currently, the 'Over 80 Pension' provides eligible recipients with £105.70 each week. To qualify, applicants must meet several key requirements:
- Be aged 80 or over.
- Not receive the Basic State Pension, or be on a Basic State Pension rate from the DWP that is less than £105.70 per week.
- Have been a resident in the UK for at least 10 years out of a 20-year period. This residency does not need to be consecutive, but the 20-year timeframe must include the day before turning 80 or any day after.
- Have been 'ordinarily resident' in the UK, the Isle of Man, or Gibraltar on their 80th birthday or the date of claim, whichever is later.
How the Payment Amount Is Determined
The DWP clarifies that "what you get depends on how much basic State Pension you get, if any." Essentially, if an individual does not receive the basic State Pension or receives less than £105.70 weekly, they could get the difference paid up to this amount.
For example, if an 80-year-old receives £43 per week in basic State Pension, their pension may be topped up by £62.70 to reach the full £105.70 weekly threshold. This system ensures that eligible pensioners receive a minimum level of support, regardless of their National Insurance contribution record, which does not affect eligibility for this particular benefit.
Claiming Process and Additional Information
Those interested in applying can obtain a claim form from their local Jobcentre Plus or the Pension Service. It is important to note that claims can be made as early as three months before an individual's 80th birthday, allowing for timely processing.
For pensioners residing in or planning to move to a European Economic Area (EEA) country or Switzerland, detailed information regarding pensions and benefits for UK nationals in these regions is available on the DWP website. This ensures that eligible individuals living abroad can also access necessary guidance and support.
