Thousands of state pensioners in the North East of England are set to receive a welcome financial boost next Wednesday in the form of a free £190 supermarket voucher.
Who is eligible for the voucher?
The support comes from the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) Household Support Fund, which is still available for retirees in the region. To qualify, you must have been receiving a weekly discount of 75% or more on your council tax bill through the means-tested Council Tax Reduction Scheme as of Monday 1 September 2025.
It is crucial to note that you will not be eligible if you only receive the standard 25% single person council tax discount.
How to claim your £190 voucher
North Yorkshire Council has confirmed that everyone who is eligible should have received a letter by Thursday 23 October 2025. If you have this letter, you must select your e-vouchers by Wednesday 12 November 2025.
The process is straightforward: use the code provided in your letter and select your vouchers via the council's online portal. If you live with someone else who is not your partner and you are both jointly liable for the council tax, and you both meet the criteria, you will each receive a £190 e-voucher.
Where can you spend the voucher?
Recipients have a choice of nine major supermarket chains for their vouchers. The participating retailers are:
- Aldi
- ASDA
- Farmfoods
- Iceland
- Marks and Spencer
- Morrisons
- Sainsbury’s
- Tesco
- Waitrose
It is worth noting that only ASDA, Marks and Spencer, Sainsbury’s, and Waitrose offer the flexibility of both in-store and online shopping with these vouchers.
The council has also clarified that the £190 voucher amount is the same for every eligible household, regardless of how many children they have. This initiative provides crucial support for pensioners facing ongoing cost-of-living pressures, offering direct help with essential grocery shopping.
