Alison Hammond Addresses Societal Pressure Over Being Unmarried
Popular television presenter Alison Hammond has candidly revealed the significant pressure she faces regarding her unmarried status. The star, best known for her roles on This Morning, The Great British Bake Off, and appearances on Strictly Come Dancing and I'm A Celebrity, opened up about societal expectations during a recent episode of This Morning.
Feeling the Weight of Expectations
During a discussion with co-host Dermot O'Leary and guests Nick Ferrari and Ashley James, Hammond expressed how she frequently encounters questions about why she has never married. "I think you do get a lot of questions, for instance, I've never married in my entire life, and I get a lot of pressure as to why I'm not married?" she disclosed, as reported by the Daily Star.
Hammond elaborated on specific situations where this pressure manifests, noting, "For instance, like going to parties and things like that, my partners will never be invited, but if I was married, my partner would always be invited to a party." She admitted feeling compelled to conform to the ideal of having a husband but emphasized, "I do feel a pressure that I need to have the ideal of having a husband, and I don't feel like I really need one."
Contentment with Family Life
The 51-year-old mother of 21-year-old son Aidan also addressed pressure surrounding family size. She shared, "Also, having one child as well, having a lot of pressure of going, 'Do you feel like [having] another one?' Well, no, I'm happy with the one." This highlights broader societal expectations that extend beyond marriage to parenting choices.
Insights into Her Current Relationship
Hammond's comments follow her previous revelations about her relationship with masseuse David Putman, who is 22 years her junior. The couple, whose friendship blossomed into romance in recent years, currently live together. Hammond described Putman as having "the most beautiful energy" and expressed gratitude for their partnership.
When questioned about marriage plans, Hammond clarified, "No, there are no plans for weddings or marriage right now, because we don't feel like we need to. We live together, and we're happy the way it is. I don't need a ring to show my love to somebody." However, she left the door open, adding, "What I will say is, if he asked me tomorrow to marry him, it wouldn't be a 'no'. That's all I'm going to say to you."
Reflecting on Love and Happiness
Hammond further reflected on the positive impact of her relationship, stating, "It's a lovely feeling to be in love. It makes you more patient, it makes you kinder, because you've always got somebody you want to care for - and they're caring for you." This underscores her belief that commitment and happiness are not solely defined by marital status.
Alison Hammond's openness provides a refreshing perspective on navigating personal choices amidst societal pressures, resonating with many who face similar expectations. This Morning continues to air weekdays from 10am on ITV1 and ITVX.
